ANGUS GLENS WALKING FESTIVAL, 29th May- 1st June 2008

Programme of walks and evening entertainment for Thursday 29th May.

Walks 1,2,3,4 and 5.

Walk 1: Jock’s Road, Braemar to Glen Doll (1st) Grade: Very Strenuous
Leader: Ian Pert & Ben Robertson, Mountain Leaders, Pete Lunnon, Angus Council Ranger.
Length: Length: 20km/12.5 miles, linear. Ascent: 771m.
Start: Auchallater, Braemar 9.30 (bus from Kirriemuir at 8.15). Grid Ref: 155 882
Finish: Glen Doll car park, 16.30. Refreshments will be available at the Glen Clova Hotel. (Return bus to Kirriemuir at 17.30.)
Grade: Very Strenuous A high level of fitness is required for this walk (due to popular demand this walk is repeated on Saturday)

About the walk:

Jock’s Road is said to be the oldest Right of Way in Scotland. It links Glen Clova with Braemar and was an old drove road. The route starts at Auchallater by Braemar and follows good tracks alongside the River Callater. Good views and level ground by the side of Loch Callater until the climb out of the glen to the plateau and Crow Craigies. This section is very steep!! A long descent into Glen Doll with good views to finish.

Walk 2: Glen Prosen via Cat Law to Backwater Grade: Very Strenuous
Leader: Ken Slater & Ben Herschell, Angus Council Rangers
Length: Length: 14km/9 miles, linear. Ascent: 700m.
Start: Pearsie, Glen Prosen, 10.00 (bus from Kirriemuir at 09.30). Grid Ref: 354 618
Finish: Backwater Reservoir, 15.30 for bus to refreshments at Lochside Lodge, Lintrathen. (Return bus to Kirriemuir at 17.00.)
Grade: Very strenuous. Full hillwalking gear required. Please bring a packed lunch.
Limit: 30.
About the walk:

From Glen Prosen a climb over Long Goat is made and the ridge is then followed onto Cat Law, which offers superb views. The route then drops to Balintore Castle and Westerton and passes around Macritch Hill to Backwater Reservoir. Stretches of this walk are on rough ground.

Walk 3: Glen Quiech, Auld Darkney Grade: Moderate
Leader: Gordon Snedden, Mountaineer, Kevin Bickerstaffe, Mountain Leader, Lisa King, Angus Council Ranger.
Length: Length: 12km/7 miles, linear. Ascent: 440m.
Start: Midtown (Den of Ogil Reservoir), 10.15 (bus from Kirriemuir at 09.45). Grid Ref: 422 622
Finish: Redheugh, 15.00. Refreshments will be available at The Drovers Arms. (Return bus to Kirriemuir at 16.30.)
Grade: Moderate. Full hillwalking gear required. Please bring a packed lunch.
Limit: 30.
About the walk:

A medium height walk on good tracks on open moorland, the climbing is steady throughout with good views. The route passes Naked Tam and rises to Auld Darkney before dropping down to forestry and the lochside track beside Glen Ogil Reservoir.

Walk 4: Corrie Fee NNR & Glen Doll Forest Natural History
Grade: Easy
Leader: Ken Slater & Ben Herschell, Angus Council Rangers.
Length: 9km/5.5 miles, circular, all on good tracks. Ascent: 200m.
Start: Glen Doll car park, 10.45 (bus from Kirriemuir at 10.00). Grid Ref: 283 761
Finish: Glen Doll car park, 13.30. Refreshments will be available at the Glen Clova Hotel. (Return bus to Kirriemuir at 15.30.)
Grade: Easy. Boots required. Please bring a packed lunch. Limit: 30.

About the walk:

The walk follows a circuit around Glen Doll Forest and includes a visit to the Corrie Fee National Nature Reserve, important for its alpine plants, birds and impressive geomorphology landforms. The natural heritage of the NNR and forest will be revealed.

Walk 5: The Airlie Monument Grade: Moderate
Leader: Alan Brennan & Richard Averiss, Angus Council Rangers.
Length: 10km/6 miles, circular. Ascent: 300m.
Start: Dykehead car park, 11.30 (bus from Kirriemuir at 11.00). Grid Ref: 386 602
Finish: Dykehead car park, 16.00. Refreshments will be available at the Royal Jubilee Arms, Dykehead. (Return bus to Kirriemuir at 17.00.)
Grade: Moderate. Full hillwalking gear required. Please bring a packed lunch.
Limit: 30.
About the walk:

From Dykehead, the walk goes via Piper’s Hillock to the Airlie Monument, a notable local landmark with splendid views, and continues along a ridge to The Goal (459m), returning by a different route through woodland and along the minor road in Glen Prosen, passing a monument to Captain Scott, the Antarctic explorer who often visited Dr Wilson’s cottage in the Glen.

Thursday’s Evening Event - Walkers' Reception and Slideshow.

Walkers’ reception and slide show. “Tales of the Angus Glens” by Gordon Snedden – by popular demand we present the second instalment looking at the facts, the myths, the legends and the personal anecdotes gleaned from many years of guiding groups in the Angus hills. Airlie Arms Hotel, Kirriemuir, starting at 19.15. Buffet supper will be served at 20.15.
Cost: £10 per person. Payable to VisitScotland Angus & Dundee in advance.
