There
are a number of named entertainment festivals in Angus and Dundee
throughout the year.
Summer in the City starts off with the festival of fun summer activities
in Dundee. A wealth of entertainment is on offer, including funfairs,
street entertainers from jugglers to fire-eaters, continental market
stalls, bouncy castles, and local radio station roadshows.
If you like to sing the blues, then a weekend in early
July is for you when the Dundee Blues Bonanza takes place. Over
50 bands play in around 30 venues across the city - and best of
all, it's free!
Each August, Arbroath harbour plays host to SeaFest,
a weekend of fun and activities with a fishy theme. There are cookery
demonstrations of the most mouth-watering dishes from the harvest
of the sea, storytelling and street theatre, and food and arts &
crafts stalls. Later in the month, the Dundee Guitar Festival is
held at Dundee Contemporary Arts centre. There is a week of workshops,
seminars and recitals from the top players of classical guitar.
September sees the hugely popular Dundee Flower and Food Festival,
which features over 1000 flower exhibits each year, and attracts
top guest chefs for food demonstrations.
The Dundee Book Festival features storytelling in
the streets, and talks and readings from locally known and nationally
renowned authors. There is something for everyone who enjoys the
written word.
Kirriemuir Folk Festival features bands and
musicians playing both traditional and contemporary folk music,
and attracts some big names from the Scottish folk fraternity. Also
for music lovers, Hairst is an annual three week long festival of
traditional song and dance. You can catch sessions in pubs and clubs
in Angus, and attend ceilidhs at village halls for an authentic
feel of how we used to entertain ourselves before the days of TVs
and PCs. Another annual event for the hill walkers amongst us is
the Dundee Mountain Film Festival. A range of films and talks take
place on all things mountain-orientated.The award winning Angus
Glens Walking
Festival takes place each summer over 4 days.
