It was at 9 Brechin Rd, Kirriemuir that the creator of Peter Pan, J. M. Barrie was born, the son of a local handloom weaver. Barrie spent his first years in this house, now a museum to his life and work, with a fine collection of his personal possessions and family artefacts. There is also the Peter Pan Room, with a children’s ‘flying experience’ and dressing-up box. In the yard
outside visitors can see the wash house, the inspiration for ‘Wendy’s house’ from Peter Pan, and Barrie’s first ‘theatre’.
At Barrie's death, there was a proposal to remove the brithplace to the USA, but in 1937 Mr D Alves bought it and gave it to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) with funds for restoration.
